Director: Prof. Jim Hough
The Institute for Gravitational Research at the University of Glasgow is one of the oldest and best established groups in the field of gravitational waves. It is led by Profs. Jim Hough, Sheila Rowan, Giles Hammond, . The group has for many years been involved in the design, construction, and commissioning of the GEO detector in Hanover, Germany. The group also delivered the suspensions that isolate core optical components of the the Advanced LIGO interferometers from ground motion. The group is the leading institute in ultra-stable bonding techniques for ground-based and space-based optical interferometers, is working on third-generation suspension systems, and on data analysis, and is one of only a handful of groups with their own GW-detector prototype. The group has several young faculty members and senior scientists, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students.
